Three days passed, and I didn’t see Anton or Allium. He stayed locked in his bedroom under Perrine’s orders. She stayed around the flat and assured me that leaving him to rest was the best thing for him. I passed the time reading, desperate to keep my mind occupied and avoid my encounter with Allium replaying in my head. I’d never had the time for it back in my old life, but here, it was almost becoming a hobby. Along with running of course.

I’d thanked Perrine countless times for what she’d done. I’d been able to stall things, but I didn’t possess the healing attributes she did in order to mend him. She’d assured me that while painful, the wounds were superficial and while he’d have some scarring, there wasn’t likely to be any lasting physical effects.

As far as mentally, we would have to wait and see.

By the end of the third day, I gave up on books and paced in my room, debating whether to knock on his door. Being afraid of what I’d find, I finally made myself some dinner to distract myself.

My feet cooled on the kitchen tiles and a breeze from the open balcony door showed someone was out there. I knew Perrine had gone out to get supplies, so it could only mean one thing.

He was awake.

I darted outside, slowing when I saw Anton smoking on the outdoor sofa, as if his body had not just undergone a significant trauma. The t-shirt he wore highlighted every ripple of muscle, and it was snug enough to expose the bandages underneath. Angry red lines snaked down his neck and disappeared under the fabric. Another ran up his arm. Given the state he’d been in mere days ago, it was a miracle it looked the way it did.

I had so many questions. What happened to him? Did Allium mean the things he said? The things I’d heard in his mind. I’d been turning them over for days. But I wasn’t sure how fragile he was, so instead started with something easier.

“Should you be doing that?” I sat down next to him, pointing at the cigarette. “I thought you were supposed to rest.”

Anton took a long drag. “I’ve recovered for three days. I was lucky to have a talented healer present, thanks to you, so my body is fine. Allium, however, needs to rest, so he won’t be coming forward for a while.”

“Will he be alright?”

Anton took another drag, exhaling slowly. “The major damage was to his mind. I’m only grateful that you were there to prevent even more from happening. Thank you.”

“How did it happen? Who was responsible?” The questions poured from me, unable to contain myself.

“It’s complicated. I’ll tell you in time, but now is not the time.”

Well, that was cryptic. But I carried on asking, anyway.

“What state is his mind in?” I pressed, aware it must seem odd, me suddenly showing concern for Allium, but when it was life and death, things changed.
